Correlation ≠ Causation

We were all taught that the sound is the amplification of the buzz. What if that isn’t how the instrument was designed to work? Learn how to play with resonance rather than a buzz.

We are taught to ‘do’ specific actions to play.

Take a big breath. Fill up the horn. Buzz your lips. Corners back. Send more air.

The list goes on and on. In lessons we’ll challenge those assumptions and you’ll learn how an understanding of the physics of the instrument will help you play without needing a big breath, that the horn is already full, and that the horn produces the sound.

Fear in playing?

Have you ever taken a breath and been afraid to play the first note? I have, and I spent far too many years playing that way. I can show you how the breathing we’re taught contributes to a state of anxiety and how we ought to play and think to promote wellness. Do I still experience some nerves when I perform? Sometimes, yes! But its now excitement and positive energy that enhances my playing rather than crippling anxiety and fear.

“Playing is simple and easier now. It was difficult at first to undo the habits that had been ingrained, but as I started to really listen to my sound, it allowed me to let go of anxiety and experience the joy of performing.”
